On FEBRUARY 27TH 2011 my life changed forever, this is my story of recovering from a stroke at the age of 21. 1 in 5 people will have a stroke in their lifetime... I hope this blog helps raise awareness of strokes in younger people or helps another stroke survivor realise it can be OK. In the UK 150, 000 people will have a stroke every year - 25% of these are under retirement age. approximately 700 per year are CHILDREN. Strokes do not discriminate against age so remember to act FAST (Has their face drooped on one side? Can they raise both arms and keep them there? is the speech slurred? time to call an ambulance!!!) hit counter added 27/12/11 hit counter

It was my housemates birthday last night so we all went to see Ladyboys of Bangkok. It’s so nice to get out and do these things and remember that I can still go out and enjoy myself despite what has happened. I still don’t really like going out in my wheelchair but the more I do it the less it feels like a big deal. the perks of being in a wheelchair are that you get better seats, the negatives are that people assume you can’t get out of it. for example when we were shown to our table they took a chair away, which is great for people who are happy to stay in their chair but i’d much rather sit on a normal chair and have that little bit of normality. This isn’t really a problem except it makes me feel bad when one of my friends fetch the chair back for me to sit on. Another massive negative for me is getting a taxi back. If we mention that we have a wheelchair, even if we explain that we want to fold it down and put it in the boot they send a wheelchair access taxi which are absolutely brilliant for disabled people but for me it is something I don’t really need and makes me feel more disabled than I am. I would much rather sit in a normal taxi and not go through the over dramatic process of being wheeled onto a taxi in the chair which most of the taxi drivers don’t know how to do properly which is fine for me because i’m happy to explain and demand to have a seatbelt put around me but I feel sorry for people who use a wheelchair accessible taxi for the first time or who have to repeatedly explain it to the taxi driver who in my opinion if they are driving a disabled access taxi, should know and understand how to get a wheelchair in it safely.

As well as getting back into my social life I have started doing some work for Tony Marks at Juice 107.2 ready for the great escape festival. Its been great because I’ve been able to do it all from home  and whilst it’s been hectic I am now looking forward to attending the festival between thu 12th-sat 14th!
